Climbing Kilimanjaro – Inspiring Participation in Phys Ed

Last month I posted a short list of lesson plans and activities based on exploring Mount Everest. Some of those lessons and activities are designed for physical education classes. As a follow-up to that post I thought I would share this audio slide show from the BBC. The slide show is about the first team of disabled and non-disabled climbers to reach the highest point in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro.

Applications for Education
I frequently hear complaints, from my friends that are physical education teachers, that today’s students “don’t do anything.” One of my hobbies is backpacking and climbing. It seems that every month I read in outdoor magazines, stories of people inspired to get fit by seeing a picture of a mountain, reading a book, or watching a movie. The point, is you never know what might inspire someone to get in shape. This short audio slide show might inspire a student to try an activity, like hiking, that they can do for life.
